Château, Saint-Jean-du-Cardonnay
Built in the 17th century on the remains of a 14th-century manor house, the château de Saint-Jean-du-Cardonnaye lost its large brick wings over time. Today, all that remains is the central main building, remodeled in 1820, and a chapel built the same year.
The estate was successively owned by the Herbouville, Crillon and Polignac families. The vault in the chapel houses their graves, including those of the last Seigneur d'Herbouville and Prince Henri de Polignac, a captain killed in action in September 1915 during the First World War.
Severely damaged during the Second World War, the château was the target of Allied bombing raids in the summer of 1944. These raids targeted a German launch pad in the grounds, from which 101 V1 missiles were fired. While the estate suffered greatly from these attacks, the chapel was miraculously spared.
